How to set up Ferðagjöf / YAY gift cards

Increase your booking potential by allowing Icelandic travellers to use their Ferðagjöf

Note that this helpdesk article only applies to vendors registered in Iceland.

What is Ferðagjöf?​

Ferðagjöf is a 5000 ISK gift card provided by the Icelandic government to all Icelanders (18 years and older) to encourage them to travel locally and experience new things all around Iceland.

How do I accept Ferðagjöf in my online booking engines?​

Step 1​

Register your company for Ferðagjöf at island.is. You will then receive an email from YAY, the system that manages Ferðagjöf. They will provide you with an API Key and an API secret Key.

Step 2​

Make sure that your booking channel payment currency is ISK following the steps below:

  1. In your Bókun account, click on Online Sales > Booking channels in the side navigation
  2. Then select the booking channel you'd like to edit.
  3. Navigate to Pricing and Payments in the left-hand side panel
  4. Choose ISK from the payment currency code drop-down and click Continue.

Step 3​

Make sure that you allow gift-cards in your online booking engines following the steps below:

  1. In your Bókun account, click on Online sales > Booking channels in the side navigation
  2. Then select the booking channel you'd like to edit.
  3. Navigate to Settings in the left-hand side panel
  4. Click on the Allow the customer to pay with a prepaid gift card toggle and click Continue.

Note that if you're using the older version of our widgets (created before 1st of August 2019) you also need to check this setting under the cogwheel > widgets.

Step 4​

Add the YAY API keys to your Bókun account.

  1. In your Bókun account, click on Products > Ferðagjöf / YAY
  2. Enable Ferðagjöf and add the API key and API secret
  3. Click on Save & Continue.

You can now accept Ferðagjöf in your online booking engines.

How do travellers use Ferðagjöf?​

Ferðagjöf is redeemed in your online booking engines the same way gift cards are.
Your customers need to enter their unique Ferðagjöf code in the booking process under gift card code.

*Note that it's not possible to refund Ferðagjöf / YAY gift cards.
